There are tons of things that I look forward to at this time of year… Taking some time off work to spend with the family, seeing my children’s faces when they open their gifts on Christmas morning, and getting creative in the kitchen by whipping up some festive treats. December is also the time that I start to look ahead to the next year, and the kind of things that I want to do and achieve to make life that extra bit special.
High up on my list for 2019 is finally getting round to making some home improvements. Here are my ideas…
Installing new windows
Okay, so installing new windows might not seem like the most exciting of home improvements. For me though, this one is my key priority. I know that it’ll help me to make my living space more energy efficient, it’ll give me more peace of mind when it comes to security, and it’ll also ensure that my house looks a little more presentable from the outside. Budget will be a key consideration, but there are tons of options out there when it comes to cheap windows that mean that you don’t have to compromise on quality.
Upcycling older pieces of furniture to make them unique
There’s something so hugely rewarding about finding older pieces of furniture in charity shops or junkyards and giving them a new lease of life. You can find beautiful tables and chairs made from quality wood for just a few pounds, and with a little creativity and imagination, turn them into something that really reflects your personal style. I head to Pinterest for inspiration, and I don’t worry too much about getting things absolutely perfect – after all, shabby chic is hugely on trend at the moment!
Creating a feature wall
Design trends change all of the time, and the reality for most of us is that we don’t have the time, the cash, or the inclination to completely renovate our homes every year or two. My own approach here has always been to keep my interiors neutral, but I’m often aware that this can sometimes make the place seem a little boring and uninspired. I’m planning to fix this in 2019 by creating a feature wall with a bold wallpaper. It’ll be cost effective, simple, and I know that I’ll be able to update it without too much fuss in the years to come. The ideal solution for a busy single mum!
Repainting the front door
This is another one that’s easy to do, but can make a huge difference. I plan to choose a really bold colour that’ll be a real talking point when guests arrive, and I’ll make sure that I keep on top of the maintenance. A semigloss is a great choice for front doors as it provides a smooth finish and an element of shine.
Will you be making any home improvements in 2019? If so, what tasks will be at the top of your list? I’d be so interested to hear about your plans, so pop a comment below and share your thoughts!
